Recognizing patterns in the arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays using deep neural networks(pdf)

The sources of the Ultra-high energy cosmic rays are still unknown. Cosmic magnetic fields deflect the particles on their way to Earth and produce characteristic patterns in the arrival directions, which depend on the source position, energy spectrum and charge composition of the cosmic rays. We present a deep neural network from the field of computer vision that identifies those patterns even for very small fractions of signal cosmic rays.
