Energy loss of intergalactic pair beams: Particle-in-Cell simulations(pdf)

TeV photons emitted from blazars can interact with the EBL, producing electron-positron pair beams. Plasma instabilities driven by these beams lead to changes in their distribution function, possibly interfering with the inverse Compton scattering cascade. Particle-in-cell simulations modeling the underlying beam-plasma instability processes will be discussed.
